Taking Care Of Sun Burns

Sun burns are quite common in people with fair skin and less common dark skin people due to defence action by skin pigment called melanin. Fair skin people have less melanin production and thus more prone to burns in summer. Hence they should always take extra precaution when out in scorching summer.

Sun burns can be prevented to a certain extent by keeping these things in mind:

  • Always wear sunscreen lotion at least 30 minutes prior to step out in the sun
  • Use an umbrella, hat or scarf etc for further protection
  • Stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you to keep your body temperature stable
  • Try to wear full sleeved clothes to avoid direct sun rays on your skin
  • Keep sunglasses with you to protect your eye area from harmful rays
  • Avoid stepping out during peak sun hours usually between 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

In case of sun burns following remedies may come in handy:

COLD SHOWERS

Cold showers help to bring body temperature down and also reduce redness. It is helpful in dealing with inflammation and swelling caused by sun burns. You can also add some essential oils like lavender to your bath.

ALOE VERA

Aloe is helpful in soothing the skin and relieves itching and heat. Aloe vera is known to have chemicals that help in relieving pain from sun burn as well. Refrigerate some aloe vera gel and then apply it on the skin for cooling effect.

MILK

Cold and low fat milk helps soothing sun burnt skin. It is rich in protein which helps to retrieve damaged skin. Take a clean cloth or cotton, soak it in cool milk and apply on affected area for relief.

COLD PACK

Cold pack may come in handy if you cannot find anything else. Get some ice and wrap it in a towel and apply on skin for relief. It will eventually numb the skin and reduces pain, swelling and redness.
