Adverse Effects of Smoking

Smoking is one of the leading causes of ailment and premature death all around the globe. Number of smokers in the society is exponentially increasing year after year. Presence of nicotine is known to have relaxing effect on body but at the same time it is having a number of side effects. Some of these aftermaths are listed below.


Smoking is the leading cause for diseases such as emphysema due to which the gaseous exchange in lungs is reduced. Smokers frequently suffer from COPD and Chronic bronchitis because airway resistance is increased in wind pipe. Prolonged smoking may lead to enlargement of mucus glands of airway.


Cigarette smokers are at high risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Death due to CHD is 60-70 % high in smokers as compared to non-smokers. Women smokers are at higher risk if they use oral contraceptive pills regularly. Other than this, problems like hypertension and cardiac arrhythmia are common in smokers.


The threat of developing cancer is 40 times more in patients who are smoking 2 packs per day for last 20 years. Smoking damages the DNA which leads to formation of cancer cells in body. It is known to cause a number if cancers like neoplasia of oral cavity, esophagus, lungs, urinary bladder and uterine cervix.


Smoking causes changes in hard and soft tissue in mouth including discoloration of teeth. Smokers tend to lose their teeth at a young age as compared to non-smokers. Gastric and duodenal ulcers are much prevalent in both male and female smokers. These ulcers more than usual time to heal and many times are recurring.


Smoking makes peripheral blood vessels to constrict with time. The circulation is reduced with time which makes skin wrinkled and dull. Even more severe problems such as death of large amount of tissue can be seen which may require amputation.
