Signs of Hormone Imbalance In Women

Hormonal imbalance has become a major problem in women. Due to changes in lifestyle and increase in amount of stress, women are at high risk of problems such as infertility, polycystic ovary or even ovarian cancer. A woman should be aware of the following signs and symptoms to cut down any harm.

ACNE

Acne is caused due to low levels of progesterone and oestrogen. Conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS may lead to acne. Increase in oestrogen and androgens which are present in very in woman body may cause pimples. Though cleansing of skin regularly may limit the damage. A medical practitioner must be consulted.

HIRSUTISM

Hirsutism is excessive and thick hair growth in androgen dependent areas. These areas include upper lip, chest, lower abdomen, back and thigh which can be embarrassing for many. Excessive hairs may be a result of many conditions like PCOS, Cushing’s syndrome etc hence should not be ignored.

IRREGULAR PERIODS

Irregular or missing periods can be sign of number of diseases of ovary and thyroid. Though may be some other causes as well like anorexia and stress but it should be taken seriously. Missing periods for a prolonged time may cause infertility. Significant changes in diet and lifestyle may help. Seeing your gynaecologist is the best decision if problem persists.

SLEEP DISORDER

Difficulty in sleep is a result of spike or drop in hormonal levels. Though there may be other causes like pregnancy and menopause. Frequent fluctuation in oestrogen level is usually at fault.

FATIGUE

Hormones such as thyroxin secreted by thyroid are responsible for muscle stiffness, pain and fatigue. It may also lead to iron deficiency hence lowering productivity. Excess production of some hormones such as progesterone can make you drowsy. Sweating and hot flushes can be experienced during night.

MOOD SWINGS AND DEPRESSION

Hormonal imbalances are responsible for changes in some vital chemical levels such as serotonin, dopamine etc which alter the mood rapidly. Frequent drop in these chemicals and hormones lead to depression and irritability.
