5 Simple Ways to Prevent Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the progressive reduction of bone density due to number of factors. Some of these factors cannot be ignored such as old age. But there are many other factors which can be avoided to slow down the bone loss. Some simple changes in day to day life may prolong your bone life and certain secondary problems can be escaped with the prevention of osteoporosis. Your bones will thank you if you make following changes in your day to day life:

The leading cause of osteoporosis is improper intake of calcium, protein and vital nutrients in diet, resulting in loss of bone density. Uptake of plenty of calcium and protein rich food such as milk and milk products, eggs, fresh vegetables and fruits are necessary for building satisfactory bone mineral density.

The more we use our bones the better they get. Weight bearing exercises such as aerobics, running and strengthening exercises increase uptake of calcium by bones. If someone is already suffering from osteoporosis then he/she should opt for low impact weight bearing exercises such as jogging or brisk walking.

Sunlight is the ultimate source of Vitamin-D, which is crucial for absorption of calcium in body. 95% of body’s Vitamin-D requirement is attained from sunlight. Frequent exposure to sunlight is recommended for prophylaxis and treatment of osteoporosis.

Consuming more than 2-3 units of alcohol is known to significantly deteriorate bone health. Smoking damages the blood vessels hence hamper blood circulation in bones which may cause bone loss. Other than this smoking also generates free radicals in the body which retard bone forming cells known as osteoblasts.

Stress is known to produce chemicals in body such as cortisol which affects bone formation and leads to prolong osteoporosis. Cortisol is also known to inhibit calcium absorption from intestine. Adapting relaxing techniques and removing cause of stress may prove to be a favour to your bones.
