Are you picking on your own skin?

Ever caught yourself picking at your own skin subconsciously (or in all consciousness)? You may have done it once or twice, but if you're doing it too much, you are suffering from a disorder. Dermatillomania is the word you may be looking for. Sometimes classified as a type of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder(OCD), it is also referred to as Excoriation Disorder, Skin-picking Disorder, or Compulsive Skin-picking(CSP).
Life is short and busy (and long and beautiful), and you may just be venting out rage, boredom or stress through this activity. Or, it could be a minor skin-injury that you're trying to even out imperfections of. The region most commonly picked is the face, but other areas like the scalp, arms, legs, neck, chest, and extremeties like fingernails, toenails and cuticles are often picked. Such picking sessions can last for hours.
In any case, it can be damaging to oneself, if not fatal. Doing this to yourself time and again can cause bleeding, repeated infections, considerable scarring, or may even cause disfigurement. Too much of it can lead to open wounds that may take years to heal. You pick some skin to even it out with the surrounding skin, in turn cause more injury to that area, and then pick evermore. It is like an infinite loop. It is an urge you're scared you'll probably never overcome.
This isn't something only on an abstract level- this is more concrete, and is likely to interfere with your daily interactive social activities. You may find yourself refraining from participating in anything that requires you to allow your excoriated areas to be noticable to people- anything to avoid an embarrassing situation like that one! Like if you have excoriated your fingers, you may try to bend and hide them when performing the simplest of tasks that involve your hands, like explaining an answer to a friend- you'd rather not use your fingers, what will people think of you? Maybe you'll use cosmetics to hide your crimes.
If you are suffering from this disorder, don't sit disappointed, you can help yourself out of it. If you don't want to be pharmaceutically-dependent, you may want to wear gloves or band-aids to resist the picking. No 'feeling the skin' means no picking. For the more medically-oriented, a good option are the various SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) available, like Prozac, which are the best-studied class of medicines for skin-picking. Counselling procedures like the CBT (Cognitive Behavorial Therpay) may also prove to be of some help.
